That replaces Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel, which is presently unnamed (formerly known as The Batman: Part II). The DC Studios film was scheduled to begin production in the third quarter of 2025 and is currently planned for October 1, 2027. The Batman sequel has had several release dates since its announcement in 2022, with the meticulous Reeves attempting to perfect the script.

"Matt is dedicated to making the best film he can, and no one can accurately predict how long a script will take to write," DC Studios co-chief James Gunn wrote on Threads on Friday. "Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films."

Meanwhile, The Batman's actor Robert Pattinson and filmmaker Bong Joon Ho's forthcoming Mickey 17 will share release dates with Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. Mickey 17 will now debut on March 7, 2025, with Sinners following on April 18, 2025.

The movie starring Cruise and Iñárritu, produced by Warners and Legendary, is Iñárritu's first English-language picture since The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio over a decade ago. It is also the first picture released under Cruise's current agreement with Warner Bros.

The unnamed film portrays Cruise as the world's most powerful man, who goes on a desperate drive to prove he is humanity's savior before the tragedy he unleashes destroys all. Iñárritu will direct from a script written with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolás Giacobone. Mary Parent from Legendary is producing with Iñárritu and Cruise.

Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed co-star.

According to sources, the decision to switch Mickey 17 and Sinners stems from delays in finishing Sinners owing to Coogler's wish to shoot the feature on film, as well as a lack of laboratories that can aid with production and postproduction work.
